Transformation: It’s Okay To Evolve As You Age

“Oh you’ve changed,” we’ve all probably heard this a time or two in our lives. While catching up with some old friends, maybe during a quick run in with an old acquaintance, or lately you’ve just been hearing it from within your inner circle. I know I’ve experienced this a few times before. The first time, you might find yourself becoming defensive trying to find a way to combat that statement. Trying to justify that you’re still the same old you but truth be told we all change at some point in our lives. It’s a part of the journey. We’re meant to grow and as I’ve grown older I find that my evolution doesn’t require an explanation.

largeAll change isn’t bad. As beings, over time you outgrow people, places, and things. It’s necessary and inevitable. Often, you’ll encounter those few people who’ll be resistant to who you’re becoming. They’ll try to get you to participate in things you no longer partake in, say things like “you’re too good now,” or “you’re bougie.” You know what I say to that, yeah I have changed, so be it! I’ll be all those things because no one stays the same. People like this don’t respect your journey and are simply saying they preferred the old you and your old ways. That’s not who you are anymore and if they can’t accept your growth eventually, you’ll either remove them from your life or life will remove them for you.  We all have different paths in life and on those paths we all encounter different life altering situations that cause us to progress, hopefully, your progression is for the better. It may sound cliche but if you change nothing, nothing will ever change.

I find that personal growth is a beautiful thing and something you learn through growth as you age is that you can’t take everyone with you as you transcend upon your journey. The things that are meant for you are meant specifically for you and only you. At the end of the day, you have to be true to who you are and walk in that truth, whatever it may be. Live it, breath it, beam it. Especially, when you’ve been working towards making positive self-improvements.

As I get older I have a better understanding  that you have to let go of what no longer serves you. You can’t allow others to make you feel uncertain about change no matter where you are in life. Change can already be aButterflyMetamorphosis1000x620 struggle to grasp depending on the circumstances so you don’t need to be surrounded by others who are unsupportive in your evolution. Like a caterpillar evolving into a butterfly, you have to transition through the stages, shed yourself of that dead skin and ultimately, allow the improved you to emerge. When a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly it no longer fancies other caterpillars. Your vibe is going to attract your tribe, therefore, when those changes fully take effect in your life you’ll find yourself being surrounded by those who are more like-minded.

I believe Jay-Z said it best, “Everybody look at you strange, say you changed like you work that hard to stay the same.”

Growth, it’s a natural part of life and I will not apologize for evolving past your comfort zone. I have every right to grow, evolve and develop just as you do. It’s ok to be conscious of the people, places and things you expose yourself to as you age and change over time. Never apologize for that. I always say, “The one thing that’s constant in the world is change.” Don’t allow anyone to ever place you in a box. We were made to paint this world with our vibrant colors and grow wildly. Stay stagnant for no one in any aspect of your life and never dim your light for anyone. Personal growth is necessary so do what’s good for your soul.
